PERRYSBURG - The State Fire Marshal is investigating a car fire that damaged three vehicles at Perrysburg High School Thursday afternoon and caused the school to go into lockdown.
Dep. Fire Chief Wade Johnson said they received the report of a car fire in the school parking lot at 2 p.m. Five vehicles and 13 personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arriving they found the fire near the center of the student section of the parking lot. One vehicle was on fire and the flames had spread to vehicles on either side of it. One of the vehicles was identified as a Jeep, and a second was identified as a Chevy Impala. The vehicle where the fire started was so damaged as to be unrecognizable, Johnson said.
Det. Sgt. Mark Baumgardner of Perrysburg Police said that at least one of the vehicles was a total loss, and confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. He said he could not comment on whether anyone was in the vehicles when the fire started, and indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
Perrysburg Superintendent Tom Hosler said this morning that the school went into a lockdown protocol as a result of the incident.
"We went into lockdown where we didn't permit students to exit the building until we had a better understanding from the fire department," he said.
A detective has reportedly been assigned to the case.
Call placed with the State Fire Marshal's office seeking comment was not immediately returned this morning.
