Sentinel-Tribune receives nine Associated Press awards PDF Print E-mail

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Sentinel-Tribune received nine awards Sunday in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper competition.
The Sentinel-Tribune competes with newspapers having a daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999.
Sixty-seven daily newspapers submitted 2,742 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2012.
County Editor Jan Larson McLaughlin was honored with first place as best news writer for her stories on a family’s foreclosure, a woman faking cancer, citizens tackling a purse thief, and a series on child abuse. She also won first place as best headline writer.
Chief Photographer J.D. Pooley was named best photographer and placed first in best use of multimedia with a video titled “Violinist Doesn’t Fiddle Around.”
Photographer Enoch Wu took first place in best sports photo for “BGSU women’s basketball” and best photo essay “Fire destroys barn” and second place in best spot news photo for “Vehicle crashes in ditch.”
Staff Writer Peter Kuebeck took first place in best breaking news with his story “Fatal Crash Rocks BGSU,” which covered the March 2012 head-on crash on Interstate 75 that killed three BGSU students and the wrong-way driver.
The newspaper also took second place in best online portfolio.
The Associated Press is a not-for-profit news cooperative representing 1,500 newspapers and 5,000 broadcast stations in the United States. Members of AP include 85 daily newspapers in Ohio.
