Sentinel-Tribune staff members are finalists for top state honors in nine categories in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors' 2012 newspaper competition.
The awards in actual order of finish - first, second and third places - will be announced at the Ohio APME annual convention May 19 in Columbus. The General Excellence winners also will be announced at that time.
Sentinel photographer Enoch Wu is a finalist in three categories: Best Spot News Photo for "Vehicle Crashes in Ditch," Best Sports Photo for "BGSU Women's Basketball" and Best Photo Essay for "Fire Destroys Barn."
County Editor Jan Larson McLaughlin is a finalist in two categories: Best News Writer and Best Headline Writer.
Chief Sentinel photographer J.D. Pooley is in the running for Best Photographer and Best Use of Multimedia for "Violinist Doesn't Fiddle Around."
Peter Kuebeck is up for top honors in the best breaking news category with his "Fatal Crash Rocks BGSU" entry.
And the Sentinel-Tribune is a finalist in the Best Online Portfolio category.
Sixty-seven daily newspapers submitted 2,742 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2012.
Entries in the Sentinel-Tribune's circulation division, with a daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999, were judged by editors from The Courier, Houma, La., and the Cumberland (Md.) Times-News.
