Dr. Sidney Ribeau has announced his Dec. 31 retirement as president of Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Ribeau, 65, was president of Bowling Green State University from 1995 to 2008.
"Serving as the president of Howard University was the opportunity of a lifetime. In nearly 150 years, only 16 people have had this privilege. It is one I will always treasure," Ribeau wrote in a letter to the Howard University Community and posted on Howard's website.
According to the Washington Post, the retirement followed a three-day Howard Board of Trustees meeting. He had signed a contract extension through June 2015 this summer.
