Innovation and economic development were the subject of discussions between U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) and Swiss Ambassador Manuel Sager as they toured Northwest Ohio businesses and schools Monday.
Starting at Owens-Illinois in Perrysburg, the two also visited Owens Community College, Loudes University in Sylvania, and Campbell Soup in Napoleon.
While visiting research and development labs during their first stop, Latta and Sager heard from O-I engineers and executives about how the company works to produce stronger glassware.
Latta reported the presence of Swiss companies have led to 10,000 jobs across the state. He said he invited Sager to the area when the two met several months ago “to show him what we do here.”
Sager said Switzerland consistently ranks near the top in investment in the United States, ranking at the top in 2010 and second in 2011. He pointed out that the European headquarters of Owens-Illinois is in Switzerland and said the companies have “excellent economic relationships.”
A U.S. presence is “indispensable” for international corporations, Sager said.
“If you are looking for optimism in terms of economic growth here in the United States, look to Swiss companies, because they continue to invest,” he said.
Sager said he was particularly impressed with O-I’s efforts to “win back” the recycling market with innovation in that area. Switzerland is a world leader in recycling.
“They invest in making people environmentally conscious, and also to promote that glass is more environmentally friendly,” he said.
Sager was appointed as the ambassador of Switzerland to the United States in October 2010.
Latta and Sager two were joined by their wives on the tour. Sager said his wife, Christine, grew up in Hudson, Ohio, near Akron.
