The inaugural Project Homeless Connect (PHC) event will be held in Wood County on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 315 S. College Dr. in Bowling Green.
PHC is a one-day, one-stop event to provide a broad range of free services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless; people living paycheck to paycheck, living in cars or outside, in shelters or surfing between family and friends. PHC began in 2004 in San Francisco, and has grown into a national best practice. This program has shown positive results in getting people connected to resources and on their way toward self-sufficiency.
All are welcome to attend PHC on Wednesday. Doors open at 9 a.m. Prompt arrival is encouraged.
A hot meal will be served all day. In addition to the broad assortment of free direct services, guests will have access to select personal care items, clothing, coats for winter, and a full bag of groceries. Wood County Health District will provide a limited amount of free flu shots on site and will assist with vouchers covering the fee for birth certificates; both services funded in part by the United Way in Wood County.
PHC is designed to provide direct services in a one-stop format. The following services will be available at PHC: employment services, housing assistance, utility and rental assistance, medical care, dental care, mental health assistance, veterans assistance, free haircuts, on-site daycare, and much more.
PHC will also provide transportation solutions for those needing assistance traveling to the event. There are two options available.
First, PHC will operate a shuttle route in Bowling Green on Wednesday, starting at 9 a.m. The PHC shuttle bus leaves St. Mark's at the top of every hour, starting at 9, and will then make the following stops: Job & Family Services, Wal-Mart, Abigail's Attic, BG Christian Food Pantry, Wood County Library/Senior Center, Salvation Army, Meijer and St. Mark's.
For questions or to check the status of a stop, call: 419-308-1750.
PHC is also providing limited funding for taxi services to PHC at the church. Call Supercab at 419-494-3380 to make a reservation. Taxi funding is provided by 1Matters and individual donors.
The PHC collaboration is being spearheaded by the Wood County Home Aid Coalition.
All previously published wish list items have been fulfilled for this event, however PHC will continue to seek monetary donations to provide services at this and future events; examples include dental services, transportation vouchers, flu shots, temporary lodging assistance, and identification. To make a monetary donation, mail to United Way in Wood County, 1616 E. Wooster St., Unit 25 Bowling Green, OH 43402 with "PHC" on the memo line.
"All are welcome to attend," said Jennifer Kephart, PHC co-chairperson. "If you don't go, 'they' won't know. They won't know the challenges you face and how best to make positive changes in our community. If you don't go, they won't know your efforts and your dreams."
