The Bowling Green Pita Pit is celebrating an anniversary and providing funding for a charitable cause starting today.
Bowling Green State University students, faculty and staff who show a BGSU ID through 10:30 tonight can receive a free pita.
Through Sunday the store is conducting a fundraising effort for Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry project.
Any customer who comes into the restaurant and donates $1 toward the charity which aims to end world hunger will receive a coupon for $1 off their next order.
Kate Dake, one of the franchise owners of both the Bowling Green and University of Toledo-area stores, is excited about this program.
She said the free pita day was held in Toledo Sept. 10 and they raised more than $650 at that location, as they gave away more than 1,100 free pitas that day.
"We were looking for a way to have a college appreciation day," Dake said. "So much of our business is focused on our BGSU and University of Toledo campuses."
Other Pita Pits have held similar free pita days and are involved with the No Kid Hungry program, indicating they wanted to combine the ideas together.
"We had not done any type of free pita day to welcome back students in the fall and decided to go for it and partner it with No Kid Hungry Day," she said.
The Bowling Green location opened in 2004, and Daker, her husband, Tom, and her brother, Steve Gesicki, bought the franchise last year.
Dake said Gesicki was the general manager for the previous franchisee, prior to their purchase. He has worked at the store since 2005.
The store is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. or later.
