NORTHWOOD - Northwood officials will ask City Council to let the city take the lead in demolishing the vacant Woodville Mall.
A judgment to raze the mall on the 90-acre site on Ohio 51 was granted earlier this year.
City Administrator Bob Anderson said this morning that the owners  Ohio Plaza Shopping Center, have not filed an adequate plan to tear down the retail facility. So council will be asked to approve posting a bid package to do the work.
The owners did put up some fencing, and asbestos removal has started, but the plan to raze the mall filed before the Sept. 30 deadline was inadequate.
"It was actually five sentences," Anderson said.
A request for more information from the city engineer did not receive a response.
"If they had gone to an engineer like they were supposed to, this would be done," Anderson said.
Instead city officials will now move ahead to remove the structure.
The company that did the asbestos work still has equipment in the building.
Anderson said the city engineer has already started work on the project. "That's taxpayer money," he said.
Anderson said there is some scrap value in the building, and any expense beyond what the city recoups in scrap would be put on the mall's tax bill.
"We might end up with an interest in the property," he said.
The city hopes it will attract another developer for the property which has good road access plus water and sewer service.
