Stigma-a sense of shame and taboo-- still haunts mental illness, despite the medical advances that have shed light on its origins.  The feeling that mental illness is somehow the sufferer's "fault" prevents many from seeking treatment.
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Wood County wants to lift this stigma and bring biological brain disorders into the light of day.  To this end it is sponsoring a "Stomping Out Stigma" 5K run and one-mile walk on Saturday at WoodLand Park, 429 E. Boundary, Perrysburg.
Registration is $25 the day of the race.  This fee covers a race t-shirt; registration without the shirt costs $20 the day of the race.  Register online at www.namiwoodcouonty.org.  Or mail a completed registration form to: NAMI Wood County, PO Box 432, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. (Registration forms are available at the office or on-line.) All proceeds from the run will fund NAMI Wood County programs that benefit persons with a mental illness diagnosis and their families.
One of 1,100 affiliates nationwide, NAMI Wood County has provided support, education, and advocacy for all affected by mental illness for over twenty-five years.  The group offers classes to help both adults and children understand the disorders that affect their loved ones. It also hosts support groups. For over forty years NAMI affiliates all over America have worked to change legislation regarding mental health care funding, and to help families navigate the often-confusing mental health system.
