The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District Two announces the latest Gold Star recipient, John Nemcik.
Nemcik, of Bloomdale, recently received his sign along Ohio 18, one of two state routes he helps to clean up.
He dedicates his volunteer efforts to memorialize his mother and father. According to Nemcik, "The recognition is nice, but ultimately I want to memorialize my parents."
The Adopt-A-Highway sign reads, "In Memory of Doc and Lu Nemcik."
Nemcik has picked up litter on Route 18 in Wood county and Ohio 613 in Hancock County for 10 years.  He encourages other individuals and organizations to get involved because "it helps keep the community clean and creates awareness to this preventable problem."
The Gold Star award is given to Adopt-a-Highway groups who fulfill all of the terms of the program with outstanding effort over a period of time.
Started in 1989, the Adopt-A-Highway program seeks volunteers from area organizations to collect litter along a section of a state, federal or interstate route. Volunteer groups adopt a two-mile section of highway at least four times a year, and those who sign up with the program adopt for two years.
The Ohio Department of Transportation provides participating groups with trash bags and safety vests at no cost, and ODOT also posts a sign within the adopted section of highway.
Anyone interested in becoming involved with the ODOT Adopt-A-Highway program in the area should contact Kim Roessner at (419) 373-4482.
