Ohio considers stand your ground
A bill before an Ohio legislative committee could expand Ohio self defense laws in a similar manner to the controversial "stand your ground" laws enacted throughout the country.
House Bill 203, introduced last month, and now before the Policy and Legislative Oversight Committee, is largely concerned with concealed handgun issues.
However, a provision within the bill would expand the locations wherein a person would have no "duty to retreat" before using force in self-defense.
If passed, the bill would change Ohio law to state that "a person has no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense, defense of another, or defense of that person's residence if that person is in a place that the person lawfully has a right to be."
Under current law, Ohioans have no duty to retreat before using force when someone has entered their residence or vehicle. Such policies, referred to as the "castle doctrine," are present in laws in 48 of the 50 states.
