BG finances $8.3M in bonds
Bowling Green has financed $8.375 million in bonds for its aquatic complex and the North Main Street widening project at 1.916 percent for a 20-year term.
Municipal Administrator John Fawcett told city council March 4 the bonds were purchased by 5/3 Bank. "Our bond consultant has told us he has never seen a rate that low," Fawcett said.
Standard and Poor continues to rate the city at A+, Fawcett said.
In 2012 the city refinanced $6.095 million in 2004 bonds, dropping the interest rate from 4 percent to $2.4 percent. Fawcett said that move will save the city $890,000 in interest costs.
The refinance bonds cover a variety of projects from the community center to utility projects.
City Finance Director Brian Bushong said keeping the bond amounts under $10 million allows banks to bid on the bonds and generally provides lower rates.
