State Sen. Randy Gardner, R-Bowling Green, has announced the formation of a new bipartisan Lake Erie Caucus of legislators. It will hold an organizational meeting in January.
"Lake Erie is one of Ohio's truly great natural assets," Gardner said in a press release. "We just believe the lake and all it means to Ohio needs even more focus. As state legislators, we have an obligation to provide that focus and leadership."
Gardner announced that Sen. Capri Cafaro, D-Hubbard, will serve with him as senate joint chair of the caucus.  They expect additional senate colleagues from both sides of the aisle will join due to Lake Erie's significance in northern Ohio. The two are asking members of the Ohio House of Representatives to join, with State Rep. Chris Redfern agreeing to play a leadership role.
Gardner and Redfern represent more Lake Erie shoreline than any other legislators, serving both Ottawa and Erie counties.
Gardner said the purpose of the caucus is to make a meaningful impact on state and federal policies and support. The problems are multi-faceted, including environmental and economic issues that need to be addressed.
Gardner and Cafaro said they anticipate a strong contingent of Senate and House members will join the caucus.¬† In addition, representatives of Gov. John  Kasich's cabinet - including the Ohio EPA, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Department of Commerce - will be asked for input.¬†Travel and tourism groups, boating and fishing interests, small businesses impacted by the lake's economy, environmental groups and others will all be asked to work with the caucus.
