Kidnap suspect trial delayed

The trial of the final suspect in a 2013 kidnapping case in Bowing Green has been pushed back.
Hui Zhang, 23, Toledo, appeared in the courtroom of Judge Robert Pollex on Monday.
Zhang was indicted on one count each of kidnapping and aggravated robbery in connection with the August
2013 incident.
During Monday’s court proceeding, a new attorney – Marty McManus – was appointed for Zhang. She was
previously represented by Adrian Cimmerman. As a result, the court trial originally scheduled to begin
Wednesday was pushed back to allow her counsel to prepare. A new pre-trial hearing date of April 22 at 1
p.m. was set.
Prosecuting attorney Gwen Howe-Gebers indicated in court that a current plea offer would be withdrawn if
Zhang did not plead on that date.
Zhang was informed of the court proceedings via a Chinese-language interpreter.
Zhang’s three codefendants – Blake Long, 21; Brittany Long, 20; and Nicholas Martinez, 19, all of Toledo
– pleaded last week to amended charges of one count of abduction, a third-degree felony, as part of a
plea agreement. They were previously indicted on kidnapping and aggravated robbery charges.
As a condition of their plea, the trio is to testify against Zhang at trial.
The charges stem from an Aug. 18-19 incident in which a University of Toledo student – himself also a
Chinese national – was allegedly contacted by Zhang about going on a trip to Cedar Point. He was later
reportedly picked up at his Toledo residence by Zhang and Brittany Long; Blake Long and Martinez were
picked up later.
The group drove the victim to a vacant house in Bowling Green, where he was reportedly robbed of a credit
card. Martinez had a knife on his person during the incident, according to authorities. The victim’s
card was reportedly used by group members to make purchases, and the victim was taken to a Lucas County
hotel where the group reportedly attempted unsuccessfully to extort money from his relatives in China.

The man was later released unharmed.
