Ohio Governor John Kasich appealed to the younger crowd Monday when he cracked a joke on music star Kanye West while addressing Buckeye Boys State delegates.
After taking the microphone from Dan Willis, a state government consultant for Buckeye Boys State, Kasich said, “I took that mic just like Kanye did, huh?”
The joke, which was in reference to West’s behavior at an awards show in 2009, drew laughs from the roughly 1,200 delegates at Bowling Green State University’s Stroh Center.
Instead of rapping the rest of his speech like the rapper he poked fun at, Kasich spoke to the delegates on what makes a good leader.
“Leadership isn’t being voted into anything — but that is part of it. But the definition, in my opinion ... is the willingness, as I like to say, to walk a lonely road,” Kasich said.
“Some of the greatest leaders are those who can see the future,” he said.
And when you are leading to the future, Kasich said, “Sometimes it’s pretty darn hard to get people to follow you.”
