High water briefly closes food pantry, reopens today

For a short time Thursday, the Bowling Green Christian Food Pantry was not accessible due to flooding in
the area leading up to the pantry.
"It’s a mess. I’ve seen it bad before but never this bad," said Shirley Woessner, coordinator
of the pantry.
She said ice underneath the water made the journey even more dangerous.
Within hours pumps were brought in and the water was removed from the area.
Woessner and other volunteers were very concerned as the rising water was within a couple inches of
crossing the threshold at the pantry door which could have caused damage to some of the food.
Prior to being pumped out, Woessner said, "We are trying to keep it from going into the pantry. If
it gets into the pantry we’re in big trouble."
Volunteers had a horse trailer of food ready to restock pantry shelves, however they were not able to get
it in. The food was properly stored and later taken inside.
"We’re at the mercy of the water," she said expressing a sentiment that many will feel as the
snow melts and causes additional problems for people across the area.
The pantry was closed Thursday evening but planned to open today to serve people.
