Happy Badger goes from clothing, gift store to restaurant, grocery store PDF Print E-mail

The Happy Badger, a second-generation family-run business in Bowling Green, has evolved.
Around for more than 12 years, the business, now co-owned by Sarah and Ben Cohen and located at 331 N. Main St., has been converted into a restaurant and grocery store selling local and high quality food.
The business was founded on ideals, and these ideals have stuck with the Cohens as second-generation owners.
"We are about reconnecting with the foods we eat, prepare and buy while establishing a community in doing so. As a growing restaurant and grocer, those ideals are what is pushing us forward," Ben Cohen said.
"We are a brother and a sister trying to make a small restaurant business work based on these high ideals," he said.
The Happy Badger was started in 2000 by Sarah and Ben's parents, Alan and Donna, as a Fair Trade Clothing and Gift Store. Since then it has expanded its capacity from four seats to two rooms filled with tables in the Happy Badger and a grocery store in back. It no longer has the clothing and gift store.
The cuisine is contemporary, New-American and caters to the breakfast, lunch and dinner crowds.
One of the business's offerings includes a brunch every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Recent brunch items have included: sherry and egg nog french toast with caramelized apples; sharp cheddar apple bacon waffles; fresh basil and goat cheese scramble with portabella, kale and roasted purple potatoes; and grilled steak, local eggs, fresh mint, goat cheese and tomatoes in a grilled flour tortilla.
For lunch, Happy Badger serves up fresh-made recipes using bread from Zingerman's, cheese from Rosewood, both in Ann Arbor, and dairy from Calder's in Monroe. Soups are made from "absolute scratch." Two sandwich favorites are The West Wooster (sharp white cheddar, grilled apples, bacon, homemade Syrian BBQ sauce and Avocado on sourdough) and the fresh basil chicken salad.
A Saturday Night Supper Club is every Saturday from 6 until 9 p.m.  Reservations are required. Saturday nights feature a menu that is constantly changing and is posted on the restaurant's website weekly.
Another feature is Slow Food Dinners, which take place once a month. There are generally five to six courses built around a theme. These dinners "have sold out every time. The first to reserve get a spot," with up to 30 spots available. Happy Badger announces the dates and the menu via its mailing list and Facebook. Ben Cohen drives to Michigan each week to stock up on fresh ingredients and supplies for the restaurant. They also rely on fresh products at farmers' markets.
"It's fresh all the time," Ben Cohen said. "Bowling Green doesn't have a ton of places or options to go that are hand-sourced from around here and where it's not highly-processed foods."
Happy Badger is open Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The business can be reached by calling (419) 352-0706.
