GRAND RAPIDS – A one-year old child was saved by lifeguards at the village swimming pool Wednesday afternoon.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office reports that at 12:17 p.m. they received a call that the child was unconscious, "choking on water" in the pool.
Lifeguard Roy Grosswiler, who was manager but not guarding at the time, performed backblows on the child, of Weston, who began breathing again. Grosswiler said the boy was unconcious when he performed the blows.
Pool Board Member Pat Snyder said the lifeguards did not do CPR but did everything they could to bring the youngster around, following procedures set up in advance.
The boy was taken to Saint Luke's Hospital in Maumee.

Roy is a great young man and we are lucky to have him protecting our kids while at the pool. He always engages everyone in polite conversation, interacts with all the children and always is polite. Thank you Roy for all you do for everyone @ the pool. Give yourself a pat on the back and be proud of yourself. WE ALL APPRICIATE YOU & YOU ARE A HERO!!!!!! Pass # 45

This is pretty cool, Roy. You'll remember that day and that child for the rest of your life, and I hope it brings a smile to you every time you do... Good job, young man.

CPR could have injured this child by not panicking and doing exactly the right thing, I am very impressed.
