GRAND RAPIDS - The village is moving forward with plans to refurbish its canal.
Council, on Monday, approved an estimated cost of $42,751 to be put toward the first phase of stone replacement on the south side of the canal near Blue Bell Island.
In the first phase of the project, old rocks and blocks will be removed and a new 110-foot concrete retaining wall will be installed.
A decision on the second phase of the project, on the north side of the canal, will be made once the canal is drained.
Also at the meeting, council members heard that Dollar General is looking to build a store on Wapakoneta Road.
"On the contrary to what certain people have stated, I have been working with the property owner for the last year to convince Dollar General to locate a retail store in Grand Rapids," said Village Administrator Chad Hoffman.
Hoffman said the last hurdle for locating the retail business in the village is having the property rezoned.
A hearing before the village's Planning Commission is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 17. A request has been made to rezone the 1.34-acre property from agricultural to commercial. Council will then hold a public hearing to discuss the commission's recommendation at 6 p.m. on Oct. 14, prior to its regularly scheduled council meeting at 7 p.m.
Council also contracted with Premier Patching to complete street crack sealing. The material cost will be $3,628 and the labor cost will be $3,102.
