GRAND RAPIDS - A nine-year-old boy drowned in a pond at his home near the village Friday night.
Devin Woodward, of the 22000 block of West Poe Road, was pronounced dead at the property.
The incident was reported at 9:13 p.m. when the Wood County Sheriff's Office was contacted regarding a possible drowning in the pond at the boy's residence. Deputies responded to the scene, as well as Grand Rapids Fire/Rescue and Northwest 190 Ambulance.
The Sheriffs' Office dive team was also dispatched.
At around 10:30 p.m. the boy was located and later pronounced deceased. His body was taken to Wood County Hospital.
According to an incident report, sometime before 8:46 p.m. Devin and his younger brother "were standing by the pond when Devin started to walk into the water" after removing his clothing.
Devin's brother saw him "moving is arms up and down, then go under water," and not resurface.
The boy then ran back to the house and informed his stepfather of the incident. A search was conducted by the boys' stepfather and two other men who were called to help before authorities were contacted.
The boy did not know how to swim, according to the report.
