Bowling Green Girl Scout Troop No. 10746 will be presenting book bags and literacy kits to the Children's Place of the Wood County District Public Library Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The Girl Scouts, led by Shea Cunningham-Darabie, are fourth and fifth-grade students from Kenwood, St. Aloysius and Conneaut elementary schools. They are earning their Silver Award this year and contacted the Children's Place with the goal of working on a project that was important to the library.
Maria Simon and Janet Ergo Zimmerman, from the Children's Place, wanted to include them in an early literacy parent curriculum called Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library. The girls have been studying the importance of early literacy and the many ways parents and caregivers can support their children in learning to read.
"The girls approached us and told us how they have grown up at the library and want to see other kids get the same chance," Simon said. "Inspired by their enthusiasm and commitment, we applied for and received a Bowling Green Community Foundation grant."
The library will be presenting monthly Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library workshops with the first one on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
Parents and caregivers registering and attending the workshop will receive picture books and these materials made possible from this grant and the Girl Scouts partnership.
This hands-on workshop will feature the importance of five simple practices of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing that parents and caregivers will enjoy and can help young children develop skills they need before they can learn to read.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their young child to the workshop. Each family will receive a bag with books and music. This workshop is free but registration is required. Additional workshops will be held on Feb. 9, March 8, April 12, and May 3.
Call (419) 352-8253 or stop by the Children's Place for more information and to register.
