Dr. Terry Engelder, a leading expert on fracking and a professor of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University, will speak at Bowling Green State University Thursday.
Engelder's talk, "Dimock: The Facts Behind the Most Famous Case of Water Contamination Not Caused by Fracking," begins at 7:30 p.m. in 115 Olscamp Hall.
It is free and open to the public.
He will also give a more technical talk on "The Marcellus Gas Shale: Geological Details" at 2:30 p.m. Friday in 112 Life Sciences Building.
Engelder's visit to BGSU is part of the annual Mayfield Lecture Series in geology. He is a leading authority on the Marcellus gas shale and has served on the staffs of the U.S. Geological Survey, Texaco and Columbia University. He was part of the U.S. earth science delegation to the Soviet Union immediately following the Nixon-Brezhnev détente, and has the singular honor of helping Walter Alvarez collect the samples that led to the famous theory of dinosaur extinction through large meteor impact. He has worked internationally with oil companies on exploration and production problems.
In 2011, he was named to Foreign Policy magazine's list of Top 100 Global Thinkers.
