LIME CITY - The cause of a fire that displaced more than 60 people from a Perrysburg Township hotel Saturday is still under investigation this morning.
Township Fire Chief Tom Brice said that an investigator from the State Fire Marshal's office is expected at the Comfort Suites, 27450 Helen Drive, sometime later today.
The department was alerted to the blaze just before 4 p.m. on the initial report of a fire alarm going off at the site. Five units responded.
"When they got there the police officer told them they had smoke in the building," which caused personnel to upgrade the blaze, and they then called for back-up units.
In the end, additional firefighters from Perrysburg City, Rossford, Lake Township and Troy Township responded with aid.
More than 60 people were staying in the hotel at the time, renting 25 of the 41 rooms.
"Everybody got out safely, there were no injuries," said Brice.
The fire was contained to the south wall of the building, with the flames located in the wall between the first and second floors. He said that the outside wall and nearby two rooms sustained the most damage - there were people staying in those rooms, he said. The wall had to be opened to fight the blaze.
"All three floors were just charged with smoke. There's quite a bit of smoke damage."
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and an estimate of the cost of damages was not available. The hotel remains closed at this time.
The Comfort Suites was able to make alternate arrangements for those staying at the scene.
Brice said that fire personnel remained at the hotel until approximately 10 p.m. to ventilate smoke from the three floors. None of the windows in the hotel can open.
