The FBI executed search warrants Friday at a Woodland Mall sports store, looking for counterfeit goods or services, and arrested the store’s manager on a firearms charge.
Spindletop Sports Zone was searched around noon, according to a press release by the Cleveland Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the Northern District of Ohio.
FBI Special Agent Vicki Anderson said agents were looking for counterfeit items at the store, which is located across from the cinemas, and financial documents.
“Maybe it says it’s made by Nike and it’s not, a Louis Vuitton bag and it’s not,” she said of the merchandise.
Agents also searched manager Richard A. Schmidt’s residence located at 1705 Marlow Road in Toledo and four adjacent trailers associated with Spindletop.
Schmidt, who is listed as manager of Spindletop on the Woodland Mall’s Web site, is suspected of trafficking in counterfeit goods or services.
During the execution of these specified search warrants, firearms were discovered. Schmidt is under disability to possess a firearm. An arrest warrant was obtained for Schmidt, and he was taken into custody by federal law enforcement.
Schmidt has a hearing set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. before Magistrate Judge Vernelis Armstrong of the U.S. District Court Northern District of Ohio in Toledo.
The federal search warrants and arrest warrant were executed by federal and local law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, Bowling Green Police Division, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Highway Patrol and Perrysburg Township Police Department.
Spindletop’s Facebook page says the store sells sports jerseys, collectibles and memorabilia. The slogan is “If you unique is what you seek; planes, trains, automobiles, beer and sports collectibles...AKA the Man Cave Headquarters.”
