A former Bowling Green woman pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon to an amended charge of endangering children in regard to injuries suffered by her then infant son last April. Erin Taylor, 20, now of Wauseon, accepted a plea agreement to a reduced third-degree felony charge. She was originally indicted with a second-degree offense in regard to injuries suffered by her then 5-month-old son. The amended charge to which she pleaded guilty could send her to prison for up to three years. Taylor showed little emotion during the court proceeding, but was observed wiping her eyes as she left the courtroom. Her son was presented at Wood County Hospital for what was reported as seizures. Upon examination, the child was found to have a fractured skull and other bleeding. The indictment alleged the offense to have occurred between March 1 and April 26, the date he was taken to the hospital. Assistant Wood County prosecuting attorney Gwen Howe-Gebers outlined the case for Judge Reeve Kelsey. Had the case gone to trial, she said they would have had doctors and nurses, including pediatric experts, to testify regarding the injuries suffered by the infant including a skull fracture and subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood on the surface of the brain. In addition to hemorrhaging and having seizures, the infant was found to have vision problems in both eyes and was considered partially blind. She said the experts would have testified that it was "determined to be from violently shaking the child." After asking her a lengthy series of questions to determine Taylor's ability to understand her situation, the judge accepted the plea. Kelsey then ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set the sentencing date for May 17 at 8:30 a.m. Per the agreement, both the prosecuting attorney and Taylor's attorney, Scott Coon, are free to recommend what they deem to be an appropriate sentence at that date. |
