JERRY CITY — Elmwood administrators are breathing easy today.
The district’s two income tax renewal requests passed easily Tuesday.
“It looks like both of them are going to pass,” said Superintendent Tony Borton at 10 p.m., with nearly 92 percent of the votes counted.
The final tallies show the 0.5-percent income tax passing 960 to 646, or 59.78 percent in favor and 40.22 percent against.
The 0.75-percent income tax passed by an almost identical margin, with 929 votes in favor and 675 against, or 57.92 percent for and 42.08 percent against.
Borton was excited and looking to moving forward, knowing the district’s finances are intact for the at least the next five years.
This is the second time the district has asked for support for the two income tax, set to expire in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Both issues were on the May ballot, both for continuing terms, and both were defeated by more than 100 votes.
The issues have been collected in the district since the 1990s, and until May, had a streak of successful passage on the first try.
Combined they generate $1.65 million for the district, accounting for about 14 percent of the system’s $12 million budget.
Despite the fact that this income is guaranteed through 2020, Borton said that voters should expect a request for new money in four or five years.
“But we’ll delay it as long as possible,” he stated.
“In the end we’re going to move this district forward,” he guaranteed.
Since the taxes have been collected, the district has not asked for more money except for the new school.
