PEMBERVILLE – Eastwood High School is on lockdown this morning after ammunition was reportedly found in a school bathroom.
Superintendent Brent Welker confirmed this morning that the school was on lockdown and that multiple Wood County Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene.
“Before school today a kid found some ammunition in a bathroom,” said Welker. “So as a precaution we put the building on lockdown, called law enforcement,” and were in the process of conducting a search so that the building could be cleared.
The Sheriff’s Office said that a School Resource Officer was on-scene and contacted his superiors after the ammunition was found, around 8 a.m.
Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said that the Wood County Special Response Team was not called out to the scene, and that there were “quite a few” deputies on scene to assist in the search of lockers and bookbags for any possible guns.
“There’s no need for the SRT, no guns have been found, no threat of any violence,” he said.
Welker could not identify the kind of ammunition found, or the amount, saying it “was several pieces of ammunition.”
“We’re asking parents to just let us get things cleared up,” he said, indicating that they were being inundated with telephone calls.
Welker indicated he had gotten off the telephone with the Sheriffs’ Office moments before speaking with the Sentinel-Tribune.
“We are in contact, they are providing any response we need at this time.”
“Right now we’re just doing a search right now, trying to figure out what we’ve got,” whether the incident was a prank or “something more serious.”
Welker said that, given recent national events, the district is in “a heightened state of awareness.”
