PERRYSBURG - Shining chrome and polished wheels may be common sights at the Commodore Building this summer.
At Tuesday's work session, Perrysburg School Board members heard a proposal from local businessman Rick Ruffner to hold classic car "cruise nights" there each Friday.
"Granted, it's beneficial to my business, but I also think it's a good community event," said Ruffner, who owns the O-Deer Diner, located across Louisiana Avenue from the Commodore.
He said that another local cruise night, at the Wendy's on North Dixie Highway, has been discontinued because of customer issues.
Board member Mark Schoenlein, himself a car enthusiast, said that "especially people that have more expensive rods, have money, it's more of a social thing, it's their entertainment."
"Always want to show off Perrysburg," he added.
Ruffner said that the cars would likely park on the expansive grassy area situated along Louisiana Avenue and Indiana Avenue.
"I don't think we're going to hurt the grass at all," he said. He said that attendees would come to view the cars and then go out to eat after, bringing in more money to the city.
With board approval, the cruises could begin in June and go through October.
Member Valerie Hovland said that the administration should ensure that their insurance would cover such an event, and that there would be no legal issues in doing so.
Barry VanHoozen said that "whatever we can do to promote business in Perrysburg we want to do," but said that the event brings up bigger issues of what the land should be used for, and "the role of the school."
