Gov. John Kasich paid an unexpected visit to Buckeye Boys State on Friday. Kasich previously said he would not be able to attend due to scheduling conflicts, but BBS organizers got word late Thursday night the governor may be headed north. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to make it. But the schedule changed and I was able to be here,” Kasich told about 1,200 delegates seated on the courtyard outside McDonald Residence Hall at Bowling Green State University. The governor later said he expected to sign the budget bill Friday, but because it was signed earlier in the week his schedule was freed up. Had he not attended, Kasich would have been only the second governor in Boys State’s 76-year history not to visit. Speaking to the delegates from all around Ohio, Kasich gave the students advice on how to find their purpose and succeed. “You only live once. So when you find your purpose, you need to pursue it,” Kasich told the delegates.
The governor told the boys to steer clear of “dream snatchers.” “Never let anybody talk you out of your dreams,” he said. The governor told the delegates he was unsure if he wanted to re-enter government work after having a career in the business world. He asked himself, “Am I going to go back into that crazy business of government?” But Kasich said he felt called to serve and lead. “If I turned my back on the skills that were given to me, I just though it wouldn’t be right.” The governor told the delegates Buckeye Boys State “is just one step in allowing you to make a difference.” “If you have been selected to be at this event, it means you’ve got something going for you,” Kasich told them. During his time on campus, Kasich shook hands with BBS Gov. DarQuavious Brown and Lt. Gov Andrew Kimerline. He also spoke with legionnaires, a couple of delegates and BGSU President Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey. After his visit to BBS, Kasich was headed to the University of Mount Union, Alliance, to visit Buckeye Girls State.
