Bowling Green State University officials are promising to take action against anyone found responsible for altering a message from the university's Black Student Union.
Monday a twitter message from an account under the name @PatFalcon altered a tweet from the Black Student Union and depict the organization as "fighting the white man."
The original tweet was promoting a speaker on diversity.
The Black Student Union responded at @PatFalcon on Twitter by stating: "No one is fighting the White man. Our organization is about getting equity for Blacks, not getting even with White people."
In a statement from the university, officials characterized the incident as "an attempt to promote intolerance and hate." The statement also notes that "all BGSU-sponsored multicultural student organizations are inclusive groups. All members of the BGSU community are free to participate and encouraged to do so."
The incident has prompted a flood of comments on Twitter supportive of the Black Student Union. Many carrying the hashtag Not in Our Town.
The university's statement concludes: "If a student or students are found to have been involved they will be held accountable under the Code of Student Conduct."
