Bowling Green State University and the BGSU Faculty Association (BGSU-FA), the university’s faculty union, have announced that they have reached an agreement in principle on the union’s first contract.
Details are being finalized and must be ratified by the union’s membership and approved by the BGSU Board of Trustees.
“We’re pleased to have reached a mutually beneficial agreement with the Faculty Association,” said BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey. “This will allow us to move forward in concert with the faculty to achieve our goals as an institution.”
“This is a fair first contract for our members and for the university. Significant compromises were agreed to by both parties. We look forward to implementing the contract and continuing to work for the good of BGSU,” said BGSU-FA President David J. Jackson.
Jackson and Mazey expressed appreciation for the work of Robert Stein, the mediator appointed by the State Employee Relations Board, to facilitate negotiations. Stein is a BGSU alumnus.
The Faculty Association is expected to take the agreement to its membership in early April.
The BGSU Board of Trustees will likely hold a special meeting to vote on the agreement. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is May 3.

Quoting Matt:
PR disaster averted, President Mazey?

The only PR disaster that was really ever on the horizon was keeping too many unproductive adjuncts on the payroll in the first place, or letting the Deans hire them to teach too many classes where we would have to offer them health care coverage.

Now maybe the faculty association will finally come clean and tell the students how the reduction of 100 faculty members will have no negative impact on their education and quit scaring them with their lies. Well, you can hope they would tell the truth.

As a student, lol, barely (senior) I hear you on that. Many of my professors are active in the faculty here, that is, in the move for greater appreciation/recognition of the faculty and their respected positions and rights, though lately ignored. However, I will ALSO say, that, as a student....I do somewhat like how the administration is bringing new businesses, such as food options, here to the campus. I know the university has many problems, but it is admittedly pretty cool to have dining options. Hope all gets better though.
