BGSU assistant coach to pay fine, have driver’s licence suspended

Bowling Green State University Assistant Football Coach William Durkin Jr. must pay more
than $1,000 in fines and have his driver’s license suspended stemming from an arrest earlier this
year.The matter was concluded Monday in Bowling Green Municipal Court.Durkin, 42, Perrysburg, was
originally charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence and a marked lanes violation
following his arrest by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper at Interstate 75 and East Wooster Street at
2:54 a.m. on Aug. 24.Durkin was later involved in an crash at 11:20 a.m. that day on Hull Prairie Road
at Five Point Road. His vehicle was struck by a Perrysburg woman who was cited for failure to yield and
was found to be at fault for the crash.Durkin, however, was cited for driving under suspension as a
result of the OVI arrest earlier that morning.As the result of a prosecutor recommendation, the OVI
count was amended to reckless operation on a highway, and the driving under suspension count was amended
to no operator’s license – expired operator’s license. The marked lanes count was dismissed. Durkin was
found guilty of the amended charges.For the reckless operation count, Durkin is to pay $395, and must
also pay a $625 fine for the license offense.In addition, he must undertake a driver intervention
program. Probation was imposed through Dec. 2, 2015, and his driver’s license is suspended through Aug.
24, 2014. He will have driving privileges for work and other necessities.Durkin was placed on an unpaid,
seven-day administrative leave by the university after the offense, and subsequently reinstated. A
disciplinary agreement for his continued employment was included in the reinstatement, as was a pay
freeze for the next year.
