BGPD warns of computer scam

Bowling Green Police are warning residents about a computer scam reported by a business on Thursday.
The Police Division received a complaint from that numerous calls were made to a local business in an
attempt to allow access to their computer system.
The callers claimed to be from Microsoft or Windows technical support and were warning that they needed
access to the computers because of malware or malfunctioning computers. The men that called were said to
have Indian accents and calls came from numbers with area codes from New York and Sacramento,
California, but, police said, could have been from anywhere.
The complainant indicated the men were very persistent and would call back immediately after being hung
up on.
Police termed this “a classic” example of a scam and said Microsoft does not make calls from their tech
centers in this manner. Unsolicited attempts to get into a computer system or access personal
information are scams and should not be responded to. No information or access was provided in this
incident.
