The owner of a Woodland Mall business was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday. Richard Schmidt, owner of Spindletop Sports Zone, was indicted on four counts in U.S. District Court, Toledo. Schmidt, 47, of Toledo, was charged with possession of 20 firearms in violation as a convicted felon, in regard to his 1990 conviction for manslaughter in Lucas County Court of Common Pleas. Five of those firearms were listed in Count 1 of the indictment from a Dec. 21 arrest; the other 15 weapons were listed in Count 2 from a Dec. 28 search. Count 3 charges him with possession of body armor, also a violation stemming from his previous conviction. The final charge is trafficking and attempted trafficking in counterfeit goods in regards to merchandise found at his business at the Woodland Mall and related storage areas. The last count notes clothing and hats with "counterfeit marks, to wit: spurious mars identical to and substantially indistinguishable from the logos and/or brand name markings of the National Football League, Nike, Reebok, and Louis Vuitton." All the marks were trademark and registered. The indictment notes the counterfeit marks "were like to cause confusion, to cause mistake, and to deceive." The firearms including pistols, assault rifles and shotguns, and nearly 40,500 rounds of ammunition. The FBI executed search warrants on Dec. 21 at the business, including four storage trailers in the parking lot of the mall, as well as Schmidt's Marlow Road home in Toledo. Schmidt was arrested that day and remains in federal custody. |
