League of Women Voters of Bowling Green leaders Paula Nelson and Lee McLaird recently attended a special leadership development training led by the league's national office in Washington, D.C.
The LWVUS is a grassroots organization that has fought to improve government and engage citizens since 1920. The League formed the leadership program, which sponsors these trainings, to enrich the democracy-building efforts of local leaders throughout the country. The program will be implemented by the local leagues in all 50 states with the support of a team of volunteer coaches.
The two-day training was held in Columbus. Participants attended "best practices" workshops that included techniques for growing the skills of emerging community leaders, for increasing visibility of the league, and for empowering citizens to exercise their voices in the political process. Workshops were led by national trainers from Washington, D.C., and Kalamazoo, Mich.
In reference to the program, Bowling Green President McLaird said  "In this time of growing polarization, the League of Women Voters is needed more than ever. A strong League in every community is the best way to ensure that we have an American citizenry that is informed on the issues, ready and able to cast a ballot, and prepared to ensure that every vote is counted."
Paula Nelson added, "I'm honored to be part of a volunteer organization that people trust and that provides me with great opportunities to make an impact on Bowling Green and on our government. This training has gotten me even more excited about the League's work and my ability to make a difference."
