By noon Thursday, Bowling Green city officials decided the weather forecast for Halloween night was bad enough to move Trick or Treat.
This was despite repeated comments that the event would happen rain or shine.
The city waited to make the decision as late as possible with hopes that strong weather would not materialize.
However, after consulting with the Wood County Emergency Management Agency, the determination to postpone until Sunday was made in the interest of public safety.
Trick or Treat night will be held on Sunday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
On the city's web site, Bowling Green Mayor Richard Edwards explained: "Several years ago, my predecessor attempted to change the trick-or-treat time in Bowling Green. What followed was a spirited community debate and the final conclusion that our community would set Trick-or-Treat night as Oct. 31 from 6:30 to 8 p.m, rain or shine. This year, our definition of rain or shine has been challenged.  Although forecast models vary, there is a potential for strong weather.  Although we believe that participation in any event should ultimately be governed by parental discretion and judgment, the city does not want to encourage children to be out when high winds are predicted."
"This is a situation," the mayor continued, "where we feel that we can't please everyone.  However, in this case, we must consider public safety. ..."
The Sentinel-Tribune has a brief on page 2 Thursday indicating that Trick or Treat would be that night. The city made the change after the newspaper went to press.
