A Bowling Green man is facing three theft charges in addition to one count of receiving stolen property. The one theft charge dates back to the January 2009 theft of a trailer from the St. Mark's Lutheran Church Boy Scout Troop 345.
Brandon M. Smarszcz, 31, of Napoleon Road and formerly of Portage, was indicted May 15 with three counts of theft.
According to court records, Smarszcz is charged with the theft of the Scouts' trailer valued between $500 and $5,000; theft of a second trailer in April 2009, similarly valued; and theft of a fish depth finder valued at more than $1,000 from Bass Pro Shop in Rossford on Jan. 26.
He was also indicted for receiving stolen property on April 25 in regard to tools, golf clubs and other personal property of an individual.
Detective Chuck Below of the Wood County Sheriff's Office said that the defendant confessed to taking the Boy Scout trailer. Below said Smarszcz said he left it in an abandoned factory's parking lot in Toledo.
"We don't know if he actually sold it or any other details about the trailer," Below said, noting it has been some years.
Scouting officials were unaware of the news when contacted Tuesday morning. However, donations were collected after the theft of the trailer to replace it as well as camping gear it contained.
The new charges are in addition to three counts of receiving stolen property for which Smarszcz was previously indicted, as well as two counts of forgery.
He was previously indicted for two counts of forgery in regard to checks written to Meijer in Bowling Green in January, including one in excess of $500. The checks were written on another person's account.
The three previous receiving stolen property charges involved a license plate from the second trailer discovered on Jan. 27; the aforementioned checks and a credit/debit card from another victim from April of this year.
