This week the Wood County District Public Library is marking 10 years since it underwent a major renovation, radically altering both its interior and exterior.
A decade on, the library's mission is still the same.
"We want to be a place where we engage the community and the community engages us," said library Director Michael Penrod.
"We believe that social function is an important library function."
Formerly more enclosed, the more than $5 million renovation opened the library's spaces up, creating an atrium area for reading and performances, and solidified spaces for its collections.
"Having an atrium, having a dedicated room for the children's department" were all important, said Penrod, as was a formalized local history area.
"It really allowed us to have the building serve what our organizational goals were. It's been great to see the amount of growth over the 10 years in terms of items checked out," and increased program attendance.
Statistics are showing that the library is more popular than ever - a record 605,799 items circulated during 2012, up 11 percent over the previous year. Library cardholders also jumped 27 percent to 27,200. More than 207,000 people patronized the institution last year.
The library will celebrate the anniversary with a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday in the atrium. Performing will be pianist George Drewyor, violinist Olivia Bryan, and the Cosmonaut Jazz Ensemble, featuring Drewyor, Bryan, Vincent Chia-verini and Brandon Benson.
A 2 p.m. party in the atrium featuring Pattrick the Magician will be held Friday. Overdue fines also will be forgiven throughout the week.
