Dr. William Feeman Tuesday night asked Bowling Green City Council to place legislation on the November ballot that would "ban weapons of mass destruction" in the city.
"I believe people have a right to speak on the issue," Feeman told council.
At-large council member Bruce Jeffers told Feeman several members of council share his concerns and pointed out that council introduced a resolution at its Jan. 7 meeting encouraging action by the state and federal governments to reduce gun violence in the U.S. The resolution received a second reading Monday night.
Council President John Zanfardino said council took the route of a resolution with the belief that is where action would have the most benefit.
Mayor Richard Edwards told council that City Planning Director Heather Sayler has made contact with state officials regarding the formation of a historic district around the Wood County Courthouse.
Sayler told council she has started gathering facts and there "are a lot of hoops to jump through" to create such a district.
Council also:
• approved the appointment of Frank McLaughlin to represent the city on the Wood County District Board of Health.
• approved ordinances issuing $9.05 million in bonds. The bond represent $3 million being refinanced at a lower interest rate, $4.25 million for the aquatics project at City Park and $1.795 million for the North Main Street widening project. All were passed with emergency clauses.
• passed an emergency ordinance to repair a pump at the reservoir at the water treatment plant on the Maumee River.
• approved annexation of 0.948 acres from Plain Township at 17379 North Dixie Highway. A public hearing on interim zoning of B-2, general commercial, for the property, has been set for Feb. 4 at 6:45 p.m.
