A subcommittee studying a proposal to allow egg-laying chickens in Bowling Green's residential neighborhoods plans at least one more meeting.
The subcommittee of BG's Planning Commission Tuesday heard from representatives of the Wood County Health Department and the Wood County Humane Society.
The group decided it wants to talk with animal control and code enforcement officials from the city and a veterinarian at a future meeting. No date was set.
At this point a key issue seems to be what department would be responsible for enforcement.
The group met for about 90 minutes. A report will be sent to the full commission.

Despite waste cleanup and keeping those chickens penned in, this is a cool idea. I am an animal lover and love all animals, and this would also increase the region's egg output! My grandparents grow tomatoes outside of our cabins in the U.P. and it is also a great way for families to save money on groceries and to be locally productive! Canada is trying to ban lawn vegetable gardens and I hope it never happens. There are some beautiful gardens here in BG, I walk by them everyday (and early morning, lol, like sometimes 1am or later) and it would be terrible if the city ever passes an ordinance banning them. Goodness knows we ban enough or seem close to it (cough, headshops, internet cafes, cough)Great idea for anyone though, food and the company of chickens, hens and roosters, lol.

I have a great pride since coming to this little town for the vegetable farms and the farmers and their animals. We should emulate that by only promoting it further. Normally, I am a big-city type of guy, and probably will move to the East or West Coast if I can sometime, but this is a great idea. Farm animals are fun to hang out with, and one can learn alot from working with them and on a farm. Maybe I can find a job if anyone needs some farm work done, I would not mind.---N.Main

One last thing....animal control and the humane society (preferably the shelter) needs to help all these poor stray cats and dogs out here, there are so many of them!!!
