Woodcock walk is Saturday at Van Buren State Park VAN BUREN - The seventh annual Stalk of the Wild Woodcock Walk will be Saturday night at Van Buren State Park. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Nature Center Shelterhouse No. 2. Birding instructor Steve Haley will discuss one of Ohio's first signs of spring, the return of the woodcock. Participants will then caravan to this bird's habitat in the park to search for them attracting females with their fascinating flight display. Those planning on attending should dress warmly and wear waterproof boots or old shoes. There will be a marshmallow roast around a campfire after the event. 'Seamanship' class to run on eight Thursday nights TOLEDO - A "Seamanship" course designed to be interactive, fun, unique, educational will be taught by an avid and experienced boater at Jefferson Junior High School (next to Whitmer H.S.) 5530 Whitmer Dr., Toledo, for eight Thursdays starting this Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will get hands-on marine radiio practice in classroom and outside compass activity. There also will be interactive challenges demonstrating navigational aids, interactive passing/crossing situations, demonstration of flares and handling on-board fires. April 6 pancake breakfast to benefit Humane Ohio TOLEDO -On April 6, the Church of St. Andrew United Methodist Men will host the third annual all you can eat pancake breakfast for humans with proceeds benefiting Humane Ohio. Humane Ohio is a local non-profit organization that runs a pet food bank (serves Lucas, Wood and Monroe counties) and a low-cost spay/neuter clinic (serves anyone in Ohio or Michigan). The cost is simply a donation of any amount at the door at 3620 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo. The event runs from 8 to10:30 a.m. Blue Creek Conservation Area opens near Whitehouse WHITEHOUSE - A 61-acre section of the Blue Creek Conservation Area, a Metroparks property in Whitehouse, is now open to the public for daily use, 7 a.m. until dark. Blue Creek is located at the corner of Waterville-Neapolis and Schadel roads. The section that just opened to the public is on the south side of Schadel. It has a parking area and a quarry pond, which is open for fishing. A one-mile trail loop leads to a wetland along the creek. A temporary restroom is located in the parking lot. Blue Creek is a multi-use facility operated by several partners. Metroparks uses parts of the property as a nursery for growing native plants. 5K on April 14 to benefit Cancer Connection of NW Ohio SYLVANIA - Mobile Care Group has announced its sponsorship of the 2nd annual Cancer Connection of Northwest Ohio, Inc. 5K event that will be held on April 14 at Secor Metropark. Cancer Connection of NWO, Inc. (CCNWO) offers personal, hands-on support for cancer patients and their families while creating additional needed programs and services in order to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of their clients. Money raised at the 5K will be used to fund CCNWO services, including the Hand-in-Hand program, which provides accompaniment to physician appointments and weekly check-in phone calls. Free services also include housing, a Holistic Program, financial assistance and a Spiritual Care Program. The event is for both walkers and runners. The fee for the run is $20 and includes a T-shirt for all those who pre-register by April 1. Admission is $25 the day of the event.
