FOSTORIA - The 2013 ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Walk for Diabetes, presented by the Fostoria Eagles, will be held Saturday at Lake View Trails, Reservoirs 2 and 3, Fostoria.
For the 14th annual Walk, Sandy Haaser who was diagnosed with diabetes in January, is serving as the honorary chairperson.
"As a retired pediatric nurse I had a general understanding of what diabetes was, but when I was diagnosed in January I was surprised at how little I knew about living with diabetes," Haaser said. "At first I was in denial, and very overwhelmed. Actually, it felt like life as I knew it was over. I now realize my life is better because I got educated, started eating right and exercising more."
The Walk for Diabetes provides financial assistance to local patients to help cover the cost of equipment and supplies, screenings and education through the diabetes education programs at ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital.
"Roughly one in every three participants in the diabetes education program at ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital is helped by the Foundation's Diabetes Fund," said Evelyn Marker, executive director, ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Foundation. "The Fund also provides free blood sugar screenings at local events as well as diabetes education program enhancements."
This year's walk will feature free blood sugar, blood pressure, and body fat screenings for all interested participants. Spectators of all ages and pets are welcomed, but pets must be on a leash.
To become a registered walker, participants pay a registration fee of $25 and receive a souvenir T-shirt.
Another way to become involved is by becoming a sponsored walker or putting together a team. Any sponsored walker who raises $100 or more will receive a gift and be placed into a drawing for an iPod touch.
There will be a special drawing for the team with the most people and/or raises the most money. Community members may also sponsor trail signs posted along paths with information on diabetes or a memorial tribute to someone special.
