Filiere family holds reunion
The 58th Filiere family reunion was held June 30 at the Bowling Green City Park, with 23 in attendance. The Filieres settled in Milton Center and many still remain in the area.
Among those attending were Donald Dunn and Bob Romaker, who have recently taken advantage of the Honor Flight program which sponsors World War II veterans on trips to Washington, D.C. Both men have received medals for their service during the war. Romaker told the story of Ira B. Hayes, one of the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima.
Darlene Filiere Clausen told how in 1850 a priest in Archbold by the name of Louis J. Filiere organized the Catholic families around that town. He was instrumental in erecting a log cabin on the site where St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery stands today.
The family decided to schedule next year's reunion for the same time and place.
