PERRYSBURG - The Hospice of Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Threshold Choir is playing host to fellow choir members from all over the region during their annual conference next weekend. The three-day gathering opens on Friday and will be held at Grace Methodist Church, 601 East Boundary St..
A Threshold Choir is typically comprised of all female voices singing at the bedside to bring comfort and ease to those on the threshold of living and dying. It is all done in rounds, chants and lullabies - to hymns, spirituals or choral music. Family members are invited to join in the singing, which follows an ancient tradition.
Songs are chosen that appeal to the patient's taste and spiritual direction and families overwhelmingly have a positive response.
Founder of the Threshold Choir movement, Kate Munger will be among those attending the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to sing along with and learn from her.
The Threshold Choir movement was founded in March 2001 in California. Over the years it has grown and as of 2012, there were about 100 chapters of the Threshold Choir in the United States and Canada, as well as additional affiliated choirs overseas.
The Hospice of Northwest Ohio choir was formed in 2008 and is comprised of Hospice staff and volunteers.
For more information about the local choir, or participation in next weekend's conference, call the Perrysburg Hospice of Northwest Ohio at (419) 661-4001.
