|Contest open to area food entrepreneurs; winning product produced at BG's NOCK kitchen|

TOLEDO - Through a simple entry form, any aspiring food entrepreneur has an opportunity to bring their product to actual grocery store shelves through the 6th Annual Food Product Development Contest. The Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) is sponsoring the contest which showcases local food products ready for food manufacturing.
Often cherished family foods are passed down generation-to-generation and enjoyed throughout the year. But rarely does an item, such as a tangy hot sauce, crunchy trail mix, zesty cracker or a tasty cookie, begin mass production for the general public to experience. Few have the resources to make that a reality - until now.
"For those who have had an inkling at some point to launch a food product - this is your contest," Rebecca A. Singer, director of agricultural programs, CIFT.
Contestants will submit a form outlining details of their recipe, and food industry experts will judge each based on the viability of the product, commercialization potential, business strategy, marketability and overall appeal to the marketplace. Finalists will then be invited to present their business concept and food product to a panel of judges. The contest winner will receive technical and business development assistance to help advance a product to the marketplace, as well as production of product to be used for consumer feedback.
Later production will take place at the Northwest Ohio Cooperative Kitchen (NOCK), located at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation on Ohio 582 between Bowling Green and Haskins. The NOCK is a nonprofit commercial facility that educates and advises new and growing businesses.
The deadline to submit the completed application is May 20, with a limit of only one product per applicant. Obtain an application form with rules at www.ciftinnovation.org, or call 419-535-6000, ext. 117.
