Bernard "Barney" and Gertrude (Chambers) Wittenmyer of Salem, formerly of Portage, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the Dutch House Restaurant in Hartville, with family and friends.
The couple was married Dec. 28, 1943 in Greenup, Ky.
They have five children, Beverly (Mike) Ballard, Weston; JoAnne Collins, Salem; Charlene (Leonard) Collins, Barberton; Peggy (Dave) Furin, Fort Pierce, Fla.; and Dan (Lyn) of Lisbon. There are 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The couple owned the Tammy Lee Restaurant in Portage in the 1960s. Gertrude Wittenmyer also worked at the former Rollers' Bowling Green Nursing Home on Wooster Street.
Barney Wittenmyer worked at Atlas Crankshaft, Fostoria, and then worked for 17 years at NRM in Columbiana before retiring.

Jeff and Julie Thomas, Grand Rapids, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jillian Marie, to Brett Alan Green, son of Ken and Nancy Green, Galion.
The bride-to-be graduated from Otsego High School in 2006 and the Salon Professional Academy in 2007. She recently received an associate degree in nursing from Mercy College and is currently employed at Changes on Mane Salon and Wood County Hospital.
Green graduated from Galion High School in 2002 and received a bachelor's degree in education from Heidelberg University in 2007. He is a captain in the U.S. Army, serving since 2004, and is currently employed at Cummins Diesel as a service advisor.
They plan a June 14 wedding at Nazareth Hall, Grand Rapids.
 
Wood County Hospital to host medication safety review PDF Print E-mail

Have you ever wondered if the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take are interacting properly?
On Jan. 9, Wood County Hospital is hosting a free Brown Bag Day: Medication Safety Review program from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the hospital meeting rooms.
Wood County Hospital pharmacist Todd Leopold, PharmD, will give a presentation about medication safety. Community members are invited to bring in all their medications, over-the-counter and herbal products for review by pharmacy students from the University of Findlay.
The students will go over how each medication is to be taken, how to store medications, screen for interactions between the medications and supplements, and answer any question.

Univ. of Findlay receives women's assault grant PDF Print E-mail

The University of Findlay recently was awarded a three-year, $275,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women.
College administrators call campus safety a top priority, and the newly funded Findlay Action Through Coordination, Education and Training (FACETS) project takes a proactive approach to reducing sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
"This grant will allow the University of Findlay to address important issues and to develop a comprehensive approach that will benefit UF students, faculty, staff and the community," said David Emsweller, VP for student affairs.

Thomas and Barbara (Sexton) Strickland, Cygnet, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wayne United Methodist Church.
It is being hosted by their three sons, Tom Jr., Risingsun; Rob, Elizabethtown, Ky.; and Brian, Cygnet. There are seven grandchildren, Andrew, Brad, Megan, Justin, Collin, Trenton and Devin; and one great-granddaughter.
The Stricklands were married Jan. 4, 1964 at the same church.
Tom Strickland retired as superintendent of Village of Cygnet Utilities and from Autolite, Fostoria. Barbara Strickland is retired from Whirlpool, Findlay.
They ask that gifts be omitted.
