Dr. Matthew Kutz is a living reminder that we should never underestimate the power of daydreaming, or of following our curiosity wherever it leads.
For Kutz, School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies, following up on his musings about what constitutes leadership skills has won him honorable mention in an international competition for books on leadership and led to his being invited to other countries to share his philosophy.
His book, "Contextual Intelligence: Smart Leadership for a Constantly Changing World," was named tops in the innovation and cutting-edge perspective category by the University of San Diego's Department of Leadership Studies.
Which is ironic, Kutz notes, since the concepts he identifies are not new and are in fact almost universally recognized.
But the way he has conceptualized and organized them into usable components has, as proponent Procter & Gamble calls it, the "it factor," and has made the book the go-to guide for such world-class organizations as Procter & Gamble, ProMedica, AirTel, and for executives of other business and civic groups.

Toledo author Nick Haskins will be in Bowling Green signing copies of his latest book, "My Husband's Wife," during this Saturday's Holiday Bazaar at Grounds for Thought.
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature several area authors as well as local artisans and jewelry designers.
Also slated to be signing copies of his newly published book at the Grounds for Thought bazaar will be Dr. Nathan Crook, a Bowling Green State University assistant professor. Crook is the author of "A Culinary History of the Great Black Swamp: Buckeye Candy, Bratwurst and Apple Butter."
A separate story in today's Cook's Corner, on page 8, features one of the recipes included in that book, a peanut butter pie from Bowling Green amateur baker Father John Russin.
Haskins'newly-unveiled work, by contrast, is a fast-paced novel. It showcases "a distorted husband, two loving wives, and three soon-to-be-shattered lives."

The Ohio State Buckeyes were in trouble: after a scandal that forced the resignation of former head coach Jim Tressel, the team was facing severe NCAA sanctions that would keep it from a spot in the 2012 Big Ten Football Championship game. Fortunately, they had Urban Meyer on their side.
Meyer, a two-time BCS National Championship winning coach at Florida and coach of the Bowling Green State University Falcon football team in 2001 and 2002, motivated the Buckeyes to a perfect 12-0 record during his first year as head coach.
The definitive account of one of the most unlikely and exceptional seasons in Ohio State history, "Buckeye Rebirth: Urban Meyer, an Inspired Team, and a New Era at Ohio State" has just been published by Triumph Books. Its author is award-winning sports journalist Bill Rabinowitz.
