One of the most important tasks facing parents of teens is preparing them for
decisions that lie ahead.
"Guiding Good Choices" is a free five-part series for parents of children
ages 7 to 14. The workshop teaches parents practical skills for steering their
children toward healthy choices and away from problem behaviors. Presented by
the Wood County Educational Service Center, the free series has been shown to
reduce teens’ alcohol use by 40-60 percent, reduce the rate of adolescent
problem behaviors, and improve family communication.
The next session of "Guiding Good Choices" begins Jan. 17 at Kenwood
Elementary School in Bowling Green at 6:30 p.m.
Participants may attend any or all of the five sessions. Childcare and a light dinner
of pizza or subs are provided. There is no charge for the series.
Parents or caregivers can get more information by calling Greg Bonnell at the center
at (419) 354-9010, extension 228, or going on-line at [email protected].
Pre-registration is not necessary.
As a child prepares to enter middle or high school, he or she will confront many new
experiences.
Peer pressure and exposure to alcohol and drugs are only two of these challenges.
"Guiding Good Choices" can equip parents to help their child manage
these situations.
The course suggests ways parents can set clear guidelines and establish healthy
standards. Parents learn how to help their teens say "no" to risky
behaviors. Families can also discover ways to manage conflicts and express anger
constructively, thereby strengthening family bonds. Participants also receive
summaries of in-depth information and a family resource guide.
The "Guiding Good Choices" series will be offered throughout the year in
various locations all over Wood County. Contact the Wood County ESC
(419-354-9010) for further information.
The series is funded in part by the federal Safe Schools, Healthy Students Grant.
