Portage Valley hosts author on WWI area German-Americans
PEMBERVILLE - A Lunch and Learn event for the public will be held next Thursday, Sept. 5 at Otterbein Portage Valley Lifestyles Community. Local author Michael McMaster will be speaker for the noon program.
McMaster, who is currently the .... at the Wood County Historical Center, will be discussing his book "Henry County in the Great War: German-Americans, Loyalty, & Patriots."
The author will describe how, while America was neutral at the start of World War 1, Imperial Germany lead a campaign of spying, sabotage, and terrorism on American soil from 1914-1917. As a result of this, when America entered World War 1 in 1917, a spy hysteria gripped America and in Henry County, Ohio an organization called the League of American Patriots formed to root out German-American disloyalty. Many prominent citizens of Henry County were dragged in front of the League of American Patriots and given Loyalty Trials. The League of American Patriots especially targeted Henry County's numerous German Lutheran churches, which ultimately led to the league's downfall.
A complimentary lunch is included. RSVP to 419-833-8917 by Wednesday.
Otterbein Portage Valley is located on Pemberville Road, two miles north of Pemberville.
