Implementing Ohio's new personal finance mandate for schools will be the subject of the second annual Smart Money conference Oct. 9 at Bowling Green State University.
Michele Pearson, director of community education in the state treasurer's office, will be the keynote speaker at the conference, which is aimed at school district and high school administrators.
She will address "Senate Bill 311: Core Graduation Requirements and Personal Finance" during an 11:45 a.m. lunch in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom.
Pearson oversees the Center for Public Investment Management and an ever-increasing number of personal finance education programs. S.B. 311 requires that personal finance classes be taught in Ohio high schools beginning in 2010.
Also speaking at the conference will be Tom Rutan, associate director in the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Bonnie Braun, an associate professor in the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

Rutan will discuss "Expectations for Implementation of Senate Bill 311" at 10:30 a.m., following Braun's 9 a.m. presentation on "Personal Finance from a National Perspective," both in the ballroom.
Preceding the morning presentations will be a welcome from BGSU President Carol Cartwright at 8:45 a.m.
After lunch, conference participants may attend two 40-minute sessions, beginning at 12:45 p.m. and 1:35 p.m.
The five topics from which they may choose are Scheduling Strategies, Selecting Instructors, Exploring Resources Available to Teachers, Developing a Highly Qualified Teacher and Meeting State Expectations.
Register for the conference at www.bgsu.edu/smartmoney or by calling (419) 372-8181.
